Studies of how wasps fly give us an idea of how they are able to turn, hover and land with such precision. Wasps flap their wings at the amazing speed of around 400 times per second. This rapid movement creates vortices of air that generate 5 or 6 times more lift than a fixed wing can give. The extra lift of these vortices provides the amazing maneuverability. Now if we can just find a way to flap the wings of our fixed wing airplanes at 400 times per second without shaking the plane to pieces…
